1. 2007 MOUNTAIN BIKE POW WOW UPDATE – THE VISION QUEST AND COUNTING COUP
Currently we have 28 positions left in the Counting Coup and 77 positions left in the Vision Quest before we sell out.
The date of the Mountain Bike Pow Wow is Saturday, March 3rd. The participation level for the Vision Quest is 200 and the Counting Coup is 100.
We have a couple of changes to the 2007 Mountain Bike Pow Wow. Due to the fact that only 1/3 of the field used the shuttle from O’Neill Park to the start at Black Star we will no longer provide a shuttle to the start in the morning.
Participants will have to arrange their own transportation to the start. We are lowering the price of the Pow Wow events by $10 (Vision Quest from $115 to $105 And Counting Coup from $75 to $65) since we will save $2,200 by not renting 5 buses and 6 trucks.
We plan on getting permission from O’Neill Park to allow the parking of a shuttle vehicle overnight on Friday for those who plan to carpool to the start and want to have a vehicle to drive back after the event ends at O’Neill, our end of the race staging area.
From O’Neill Park we will have one bus and one truck to shuttle people back to the start at Black Star starting at 2 p.m. with the last shuttle at 5 p.m.
We will have ONE start time of 5:30 a.m. There will be no early start at 5:00 a.m. as has been done in past Pow Wows. The Forest Service for reasons of safety has asked us to add an 11:30 cutoff time to reach four corners and the Main Divide. This cutoff time is located past Aid Station one located at the base of the Silverado Motorway (Trail) and Maple Springs Road (Silverado Canyon Road where is enters the National Forest), which has a cutoff time of 9:30. Vision Quest riders have an additional cutoff time to reach the base of the West Horse Thief Trail, the last up (hike a bike), which is 12:30 p.m. These cutoff times (negotiated with the Forest Service) are to help us to move our support/communications/medical support with the leading pack of participants and allow us to get everyone accounted for and off the mountain by sundown.
As previously mentioned, because we will not be providing shuttles to the start the 2007 entry fee has been lowered by $10; $65.00 for the Counting Coup and $105.00 for the Vision Quest.
The entry fee includes breakfast goods at the start, lunch, t-shirts, raffle prizes, a coup feather for finishers of the Counting Coup and a beaded Coup Feather, as well as helmet and car coup feather stickers for finishers of the Vision Quest.
Participation is limited to 200 for the Vision Quest (77 positions left) and 100 for the Counting Coup (28 position left) – and the events always sell out. To insure a spot in either event register ASAP.

2. YOUR INPUT NEEDED FOR THE FOREST SERVICE MOUNTAIN BIKE STRATEGIC PLAN
Listening Session Public Announcement:
USFS, Region 5 is to conducting public listening sessions throughout the state to solicit public input from mountain bicyclists and trail users on how to best provide sustainable mountain biking recreation in California’s National Forests. Mountain biking has become a major activity in many Forests and clear management strategies are needed to insure continued recreation opportunities and protection of natural resources. Input from listening sessions will be used to develop a mountain bike management strategy. It is envisioned the strategy will have two major components; 1) a Situational Assessment, that will characterize existing issues and opportunities and 2) Implementation Toolbox, that will provide managers with a suite of prescriptions to address issues identified in the Situational Assessment. The meetings will be held at the following locations:

4. HELP DUSTIN FIND HIS LOST RIM AND TIRE
I hoping the mountain bike community can help me out. I was headed to the Thanksgiving Ride from Harding to Four Corners and lost a wheel on the way from Cooks Corner to the bird sanctuary. The wheel is a green Chris King wheel set with a salsa skewer. I was so bummed that I couldn’t make the ride but even more bummed that I was out a wheel. If anyone in the mountain bike community could distribute this email to possibly locate my wheel I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for the understanding.
