1. REGISTRATION FOR THE 2012 VISION QUEST AND COUNTING COUP TO OPEN THIS SATURDAY OCTOBER 1ST

Event Date: April 7, 2012
Santa Ana Mountains, Orange County, CA
Event Start: 5:30 AM

Registration opens October 1st, 2011 @ 8:00 p.m.

There are no mail-in apps.

The event fee is $125 for the Vision Quest and $85.00 for the Counting Coup and includes finishing award, t-shirt, and post-event food

All entry fees are non-refundable, non-transferable and non-deferrable. We have to plan well in advance and therefore cannot offer refunds. You may not give or sell your number to another individual. The entry fee for a 2012 event WILL NOT transfer to the 2013 event, no exceptions. This policy stays in effect whether you are injured, have unexpected business, a family emergency, etc. Sorry, there are NO exceptions.

2. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1ST – RIDGE MTB POKER RIDE IN SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO

On Saturday, October 1st let’s ride the scenic hills of old San Juan Capistrano for the Ridge MTB Poker Ride, and have some fun along the way! The event will offer five stops with poker card drawn at each, best hand at end of five stops wins bike GPS system! This is a non-competitive event and not timed. Start/finish for all events at same location. Location is at the trail head at east end of Camino Las Ramblas, off Hwy 5, SJC. Parking only on Camino Las Ramblas. Entry Fee is $35 before race day; $40 day of race (no refunds). Official event T-shirt included in fee.

Team event will consist of 5 riders taking the same course as individual riders. Team will select best hand by one team member for best hand prize entry. Best Hand for team category wins Dinner and a VIP Movie night for two for each team member. Riders will be able to also compete for the individual prize by paying an additional $10 (on site – cash only).

Ridge 10K & 5 K Trail Runs precede Mountain Bike Poker Ride two hours earlier.

Ridge MTB Poker Ride is for a worthy cause with all proceeds supporting the City’s improvements to our multi-use trails and SJC Rotary community programs.

3. WEB SITE DEVOTED TO SAVING/PURCHASING LAND FOR THE SANTIAGO TRUCK TRAIL – SIGN ONLINE PETITION

Due to concerns raised by the County office of Risk Management, the Orange County Board of Supervisors postponed voting (Agenda Item #44) on the purchase of land for a parking lot at the trail head of the Santiago Truck Trail as well as other improvements. They will be casting their votes in early October.

As stated in our last update, the county plans to build a parking area near the top of Modjeska Grade Road for Santiago Truck Trail by acquiring 100 acres from a private landowner at a below-market cost. This purchase of land is designed to:

1. Ensure public access to this trail is locked up permanently.
2. Provide a parking area at the top of Modjeska Grade Road.
3. The additional 100 acres will open the County to future recreational improvements beyond just a parking area.

The votes needed to pass this are in doubt and we still need you to re-email, or if you haven’t already, email the Supervisors. It is extremely important for those of you who live in the Supervisory Districts of Supervisors Bates, Moorlach, Nelson and Nguyen to email them and state that you live in their district and this issue is important to you.

From what we understand Bates is the key vote so if you live in her District in South County she needs to hear your voice.

When emailing Supervisor Campbell thank him for his support of this proposal and his continued support or our access. He has truly been a “trail hero” to the recreation community.

We cannot stress enough that your messages to the Supervisors could help shove Item #44 over the edge and pass it.

Messages to the supervisors could mention Santiago Truck Trail as:

1. “Item 44” on the agenda to help the Supervisors recognize it easily.

2. The most popular trail based on overall usage of any trail in Orange County and important to all user groups

3. It would protect the safety of recreationist who now has to ride up narrow Modjeska Grade Road to access the trail. The new parking lot would create a more accessible environment for trail runners and Bikers with parking at the trailhead. An equestrian loading and unloading zone is also in the plans. So this isn’t just limited to Mountain Bikers. Pass the word.

1. ACCESS ALERT – VOTE TO PURCHASE STAGING AREA FOR THE SANTIAGO TRUCK TRAIL (LUGE) POSTPONED UNTIL OCTOBER

We found out late Monday night that the County Board of Supervisors vote to purchase property for a staging area for the Santiago Truck Trail has been postponed until sometime in October. As soon as we know the date we’ll let you know and re-release the contact info for the Board of Supervisors.

2. THE FOREST SERVICE IS SEEKING OFFICE/MAPLE SPRINGS VISITOR CENTER VOLUNTEERS

Dear Volunteers,

We are looking for a volunteer to assist in the Corona District office on Monday mornings from 9AM until 11AM.
It would be ideal if a local volunteer would be able to do this since it is such a short time period. No holiday Mondays.
Please let me know if you would like to give this a try.

Also, we REALLY need more volunteers assisting at the Maple Springs Visitor Center in Silverado Canyon.
You can pretty much pick your own schedule, we’re very short staffed.
Please contact Daryl at walezak@sbcglobal.net and he will show you how to sign up for shifts on the calendar.
If you would like an introductory session at the VC let me know.

3. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17TH – INNER COASTAL & WATERSHED CLEAN-UP

Trails4All is again spearheading the Watershed cleanup events throughout Orange County with the Forest Service, SHARE and the Warrior’s Society organizing the cleanup in Trabuco Canyon (the road to the Holy Jim Trail)

We will need a driver & assistant for the stake side truck to haul debris (volunteers with a federal license).
We have been asked to remove the debris from a burned out cabin in Holy Jim and would also like some volunteers to walk along the creek within the forest boundary and remove debris.

If you have a truck we can use it to; the more trucks we have the quicker the work will go.

Trash can be bagged and piled along the road for pickup. Great way to spend a morning!

We will have registration check-in at the forest boundary beginning at 8:00 A.m. and working until noon. Supplies will be provided as well as a pizza lunch.

4. GIRACCI VINEYARDS HOSTS FUNDRAISER TO BENEFIT THE INTER-CANYON LEAGUE

On Saturday, September 17th from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Giracci welcomes the Inter-Canyon League as they host their 2nd annual wine tasting event. The Inter-Canyon League sponsor many activities that benefit the residents of the canyons and helps coordinate assistance during fires and floods.

Giracci will be pouring along with Hamilton Oaks Winery, Frisby Cellars and other fabulous local wineries. There will be wine tasting, appetizers, silent and live auctions, local artisans and entertainment. 5. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24TH – NATIONAL PUBLIC LANDS DAY

The Forest Service is in the process of planning a public event at Tin Mine Canyon behind Corona.

The early hours will be a cleanup and trail maintenance.

Later in the morning we will offer interpretive hikes and a Junior Ranger Program.

Volunteer assistance will be needed with registration, information, trail maintenance, interpretive walks, Jr. Ranger Program, painting and fence repair.

If you would like to assist with either or both of these morning events please let me know.

No experience needed for many of the tasks. We’ll train you.

We really need a BIG response in support of this purchase and the vote is tomorrow, Tuesday, September 6th.
