1. “THE TRAVERSE” IS SOLD OUT
Our second event of 2009 “The Traverse) has sold out. If you still want to
try and get a spot in the event we suggest you buy a spot from someone who
drops out.
We will be directing all those dropping out to post their spot for sale on
the Socal TrailRiders message board:

They will have to contact us directly via countingcoup@warriorssociety.org
to let us know of the change and it is up to them to handle your payment to
them. We must be notified of any transfer of spots in the events and people
looking to buy spots should be sure we are cc in any email exchange with the
seller to verify it is a legitimate spot.
If you buy your spot from someone we need the following information to make
the change:

“The Traverse” is a race to benefit the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund:

The Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund honors the bravery and dedication
exhibited by Americans in our Armed Forces who have sacrificed life or limb
defending our country by providing educational scholarships to their
children.

Event Start: 7:00 AM
40+/- miles, 8,000+/- feet elevation gain
Starting Location: Black Star Canyon Road
Finish Location: Trabuco Creek Road and Trabuco Canyon Road Post-event
staging area: O’Neill Regional Park
The race will have Intermediate, Expert and Pro classes with the Pro class
men and women racing for finishing cash. There must be a minimum of 5
participants in each age group or the age group will be combined with
another age group.

The event fee includes awards for top finishers, finishing ribbon for all
participants, t-shirt and food catered by El Pollo Loco.
2. TOAD FESTIVAL UPDATE
The Toad Festival is a benefit for the Wounded Warrior Program. The Wounded Warrior Program works raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, helps severely injured service members aid and assist each other, and provides unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of severely injured service members.

We have a participation limit of 175 for the long ride and have 70spots
left.
Short Ride: 10 miles, 500 feet of climbing. This ride is a great beginners
and kids ride through the beautiful tree-covered trails of O’Neil Park.
Long Ride: 27.5 +- miles, 5,000 +- of elevation gain
1. Start at O’Neill Park Picnic area and ride to Holy Jim Trail Head – a
small amount of pavement with 5 miles of fire road.
2. Holy Jim Trail Head to Main Divide – 6 miles of steep single track
climbing with multiple stream crossings.
3. Holy Jim Trail to Trabuco Canyon Trail – 6 miles of rutted fire road with
steep climbs and descents.
4. Trabuco Canyon Trail to Holy Jim Parking area – 5 miles of down hill,
technical single track with stream crossings with 1/2 of a mile of fire road
5. Holy Jim Parking area to Picnic area – 5 miles of fire road and a small
amount of pavement.
The Long Ride is not for beginning or novice riders. Participants will be
responsible to carry all food and water needed to complete the ride. There
will be no sag support (except in case of total breakdown or emergency).
Support personnel will be stationed at 5 rest stops along the course.
Riders in the fun rides will compete in games of chance and skill (darts,
horseshoes, helmet toss and Blackjack cards). Those with the highest
combined score will win prizes. You must make the checkpoints in a
reasonable time or you will not be allowed to continue.

3. THE TRAVERSE AND TOAD FESTIVAL EVENT REFUND POLICY
We do not offer refunds to those that drop out before the event – but we do
allow them to sell their spot to someone else UP UNTIL TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE EVENT (Friday, April 24th for the Traverse and Friday, May 23rd for the Toad Festival). After this date you will not be able to transfer your spot and we will not give refunds.
If you want to sell your spot we suggest posting it for sale on the Socal
TrailRiders message board:

4. TRABUCO DISTRICT ACTIVITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES 2009

Great for families” Displays, interactive events, mini-hikes, puppet show and Smokey Bear. Bring a picnic and stay awhile. Free. Non-volunteers will need a parking pass.
Sat. April 11 WEB SITE PLANNING MEETING 9 AM – NOON
We are planning out the website for Trabuco Volunteers. If you are interested in helping to develop this site or are willing to help research and provide information for the site please join use. This site is for you!
Sat. April 18 WILDERNESS PATROL TRAINING 8 AM – 4 PM
The Forest Service Volunteer Association annual training and refresher is Saturday, April 18th. We would be happy to have any Trabuco Ranger District volunteers for equestrian and foot Wilderness Patrol classroom training. The training will be held at the Idyllwild Fire Station at Hwy 243 and Pine Crest Ave.(not Keenwild)
In the fall, as the weather cools down, there will be orientation patrols in the San Mateo Canyon and Agua Tibia Wilderness areas. Please let Brad Eells (bradlnss@ca.rr.com) and Debra know if you are interested and able to attend.
Sun. April 19 NOTICE OF NON-COMPLIANCE (NNC) TRAINING 10 AM to 4 PM
Meet at the District Office, 1147 E. Sixth Street, Corona. Bring a lunch.
Sat. April 25 GRAFFITI REMOVAL AT ORTEGA FALLS 9 AM TO NOON
Need help removing graffiti and trash. Will be joined by Scouts and could use lots of help! Bring a “Hudson sprayer” to spray water under pressure if you have one. Wear hat, sunscreen, bring snacks and water.
Sat. April 25 RESTORATION TRAINING 9 AM – 2 PM
Herbaceous Perennials, Eradication Methods II Location: Acjachemen Meadow, across from Long Canyon Rd. on Ortega HWY.
Sun. April 26 MAP & COMPASS 8:30 AM to 5 PM
Training will be held at the Corona District office. Park behind building. 20 person limit. Bring lunch. Instructor is Tracy Lenocker, San Bernardino County Fire, Emergency Communications Service. Captain, Central Mountain Section.
This class covers a lot of material and includes all the important information you will need while working in the forest or in an emergency.
Subjects covered include:
Maps – history, how they are made, different types
Mapping Systems – lat/long, UTM, State Plane, Thomas Bros, NAD 27/NAD 83
Topographic maps – understanding the information on these maps
Compass – the three North’s, declination, error correction
Map and Compass use – map to compass travel and vice versa
GPS – general understanding and use
Digital mapping – GPS maps, computer based maps, software, available data
There will be lots of class notes and sample problems which you will be able to take with you. Tracy will supply laminated printed maps to use in class. If you have a GPS receiver, please bring it to class with you. The instructor will have two for use in the class to learn how to take coordinates with a receiver.
MOST IMPORTANT! Class size is limited to 20 persons. If you register then cannot attend please let us know right away so we can refill your spot in class. There is no fee for this class and the instructor absorbs all printing costs. The class materials are outstanding!
The class will have limited field work. All field work will be completed on site. Depending on the weather, consider bringing a coat, hat, sunglasses. The instructor will supply just about everything for the class. Participants should bring a notepad or clipboard or something hard to write on for the field portion of the class.
Tracy also offers an Advanced Class if you want more information. We will send information when he has an advanced class scheduled.

We are planning out projects and need all the help we can get. We’re hoping to build a loading ramp, brush trails, paint, and much more.

Sat. May 16 DRIVING TOUR OF THE SANTA ANA MOUNTAINS 8AM – 4:00 PM
Arrive early at the Silverado Forest Service Fire Station, we leave promptly at 8AM. Bring lunch, snacks, water, camera, binoculars.
Sat. June 6 NATIONAL TRAILS DAY – TIN MINE CANYON 9 AM – NOON
Join us at Tin Mine Canyon (off Lincoln and Foothill in Corona) for a clean-up, some trail work and interpretive programs.
Fri-Sun June 5-7 TEMECULA VALLEY BALLOON & WINE FESTIVAL Contact Maria (festival staff) at 951-676-6713. Let her know that you would like to complete a festival volunteer application to help the Smokey Bear Balloon Crew. Maria will notify Brett Davidson that you are on the crew and you will receive a free parking pass and a meal ticket.
